Final Exam Piece - Woodland Moving Sculpture - Updating

Exam piece with research and preparation prior to exam times. I have a thing for nature, so went with a woodland theme, but wanted to make it unusual and so a mechanical twist came to play.

The idea was on bullying, how people are scared and discriminate, yet can be drawn to what frightens them i.e. those of us who do not like squirmy and flying creatures, yet inquisitive of anything moving. For instance, my exam piece is based on those who are scared of moths and butterflies, especially the larger species where some have described them with big beady eyes. I studied sociology many years ago when I was seventeen and the reasons why individuals bully came to light in the course.

1. Targeted bullying due to jealousy, envy and greed.

2. Hate due to discrimination derived from family background and education, egotistical traits, delusions of superiority over another individual.

3. Intimidated by others who seem in a better situation, desirable lifestyle and property.

4. Low self-esteem, the need to make themselves feel better, covering up their own insecurities with a fake persona.

5. Peer pressure; afraid of standing out, afraid of standing up for values or another being, cowardly approach to join ringleaders to avoid being the target.

Ideally I would have liked this to be at least 6 foot high to highlight my point, unfortunately time and budget was a big reason not to.

This was part of research and was used in the final production. Rip 'n' stich fabric layered on acrylic felt and needle felted with wool on top.
